I currently work in the overseas credit division, and my primary responsibility is drafting credit reports on overseas institutional clients. In a concise report, I have to truthfully depict the clients, including their background, competitive advantages and disadvantages, market positioning, and financial status. Our goal is to formulate credit reports that disclose crucial information and cover all risks, which require logic, critical thinking, and quick reading skills.
Besides drafting reports, I also assist overseas subsidiary banks in the credit business, offering training on various topics and serving as a contact person.
I particularly remember a training session at the Ho Chi Minh City branch. During that session, I taught in my native language. It felt like we were one big family, and we all understood one another. It was an unforgettable experience.
Since joining CTBC, the company has provided a comprehensive training course on institutional banking and credit, helping me get up to speed at work as soon as possible. Probably partly because I come from another country, colleagues in my team have taken special care of me. The supervisors have been generous in sharing their experiences, showing me how to overcome obstacles and frustrations. Their wisdom has helped me adapt to the workplace in institutional banking.
The scope of institutional banking is vast, with credit merely being one aspect of the business. Nevertheless, I find it a great starting point, and through my experience working at credit, I have learned so much about the clients and the services that suit them best.
Banking is a highly regulated sector with rigorous external and internal protocols. The relevant regulations are extensive and complex, especially challenging for non-native Chinese speakers. We must be mentally prepared. Besides that, with your expertise and professionalism, I am confident that all of you joining CTBC will do just fine.
As an IA at Taiwan retail banking - wealth management products, I enjoy multitasking. Two of my primary responsibilities are managing wealth management products in Taiwan and strategic planning for subsidiary banks overseas. For Taiwan, I play the role of a product project manager, responsible for developing products, strategies, marketing campaigns, and maintenance. For overseas, my roles include project planning and execution. I formulate business strategies for subsidiary banks overseas and submit proposals for the evaluation of department heads. These can serve as a reference for future IAs. Additionally, I have been fortunate to be involved in the Money Unijang project of the product division, serving as a scriptwriter, producer, and actor, planning and filming the promotional videos for the Bank's Youtube channel. The multi-faceted training and responsibilities allow me to learn a great deal. Let's go beyond our expectations with CTBC!
The bank issues a great variety of wealth management products, and retail banking involves many assets, from bonds, funds, and insurance to deposits. I currently work in consumer banking of the international retail banking division. Here, I not only learn about retail banking in Taiwan but local markets in the Philippines, Indonesia, China, and Thailand. I mainly serve as the bridge between Taiwan headquarters and the Thai subsidiaries, helping colleagues in Taiwan and Thailand to communicate more efficiently. Also, I help facilitate the export of the legacy, digital capabilities, and business model of the parent back in Taiwan to Thailand, promoting cross-border collaborations.
● An organization seeking innovation and change: CTBC not only aims to expand its presence in South East Asia but actively restructuring the parent bank to serve as the foundation for furthering businesses overseas. During my one year at CTBC, I have encountered multiple transfers - showing that the internal organization is rapidly evolving in step with the ever-changing external environment and constantly aiming to improve the quality and effectiveness of decision-making.
● Project exchange: My division often hosts division-wide meetings, where colleagues across various departments share trends and information in the financial sectors of domestic and overseas markets, propose projects on relevant topics, set targets, and move forward together.
● An open and honest workplace: We enjoy a warm, welcoming atmosphere at work, with harmonious relationships among the supervisors and colleagues. Newcomers are granted opportunities to try out new things and learn. We also organize occasional afternoon tea and gatherings, enjoying each other's company even when we are off duty.
It is crucial to be passionate about new things. For example, when I was working in the international affairs division, we must be fully aware of the trends and movements of the global market. Since the politics, cultures, and laws vary in different countries, remaining curious has brought me more motivation, inspiration, and insight. As we have access to vast information nowadays, I encourage you all to find the most suitable ways to acquire knowledge, constantly accumulate expertise and insight into international affairs, and adapt to the rapid changes in the global economy, politics, and the environment.
I am currently a Ficon at the international financial management division. My primary responsibility is for performance summary and analysis for overseas branches and subsidiary banks, including product cost/income analysis, budget analysis and control, compiling internal financial reports, and assessing overseas projects. I currently cover the Philippines, Indonesia, and the South East Asia Office.
The international financial management division is not only responsible for providing crucial financial information for other departments but meeting their additional needs. Therefore, time allocation, setting up priorities, and inter-departmental communication is key to my work. Although challenging, I found a great sense of achievement in helping the sales departments to understand their performance better overseas. I also take pride in utilizing my language skills to improve the efficiency of international communication.
I enjoy the atmosphere of the workplace. While we are busy, the care and companionship from supervisors and colleagues have made me more driven at work. Just as the motto of CTBC - We are family - I genuinely feel that we are like a family, helping and caring for one another. Whenever I encountered an obstacle, my senior colleagues would lend a helping hand rather than let me stay late all by myself. And although the supervisors are busy, they still make time to learn about how we are doing. I have learned so much here, from time management, inter-departmental communication, and telling stories with numbers - understanding the performance overseas through financial data. Additionally, I have learned the importance of professionalism here. For example, I learned how to ask questions properly - I have to state the purpose of the question and conduct research on possible answers beforehand, rather than simply blurting out whatever my supervisor instructed me to ask.

The aim of crafting these reports is to assist the bank in comprehending credit risk. Alongside writing reports, I also get the chance to conduct on-site visits, directly engaging with clients to gather insights from various perspectives, rather than relying solely on written data.
Having completed a range of analytical cases, I have gained a nuanced understanding of diverse businesses and experienced a sense of accomplishment. This endeavor aligns with the ethos of CTBC's "Go Beyond" spirit.
